The history of the use of fishing attractants – compounds of various materials that are used to attract fish in recreational, sports and commercial fisheries through action on the organs of smell and taste of fish, has more than a dozen years.
When and who first began to use spices and flavors to the natural and artificial nozzles – it is difficult to say, but in recent times, when anglers are increasing, and fish – all smaller role of attractants increases. Currently, there are many types of attractants, which nobody seems to have not even tried to classify.
Attractants for fishing
Outset that are not attractants to bait fishing and mixtures. Classify attractants in terms of chemistry is not possible, as they often are a complex mixture of organic and inorganic chemical compounds, not reproducible by chemical synthesis.
Common to all is the ability of attractants in the dissolved or suspended in water, able to attract the fish. All currently known attractants can be divided into three groups.
- Traditional attractants. Identified empirically and are not originally designed to attract fish. They do not have a clear scientific basis for the application, although it is often very effective. This is – the most ancient group of attractants.
These include human food, have a strong smell and taste, such as honey, sunflower, sesame, dill, anise and linseed oil, confectionery additives, including vanillin; products of the pharmaceutical industry (Corvalol, camphor, drops, balms KIM and “Star”, turpentine), and even cracking of oil products, such as kerosene.
This may also include various extracts and extracts from manure worms, garlic, broth spicy cloves and homemade attractants based on the blood of animals. The vast majority of funds of the group are designed to attract white, not predatory fish.
- Commercial attractants. The group includes many attractants produced by different companies focused on the production of these products.
Depending on the level of development of the industrial base and used the company’s technology can produce attractants of different levels – from traditional, differing only in a more or less modern form (granules, gels, solutions) and pre-packaged in jars, fitted with brand labels, to complex chemical compounds, which are designed by known chemical and pharmaceutical companies, and are available in a user-friendly way (gel, granules, aerosols).
In large firms engaged in the production of attractants, often work the whole research institutes, famous ichthyologists, specialists in fish physiology, bio-technology. Many firms are working in direct contact with the major producers of baits and fishing lures and equipment (Berkley, Sensas, Rublex, Yum, Bass Assasin, Gary Yamamoto).
In the context of a general trend of capital merger – it is justified. There is nothing surprising in the fact that the vast majority of manufacturers of fishing attractants come from the United States and Western Europe – that is where the amateur and sport fishing (rather tackle, lures and accessories for her) became one of the biggest components of big business.
In addition to recreational fishing, attractants and commercial demand is still “small” commercial fishing. Against the background of the growing popularity of carp (and in general the bottom) fishing and fishing with all kinds of artificial lures, especially of soft plastic, blends well with the odorous substances, manufacturers of fishing attractants continue to prosper.
In English-speaking countries to attract fish attractants usually denoted by the terms “Fish Attractants”, “Fish Formula”, “Fish Scents”. There is also some less common terms: for example, the attractant produced in the form of a gel, often write Flavour Gel For Fish Bait.
Small manufacturers, who do not have a scientific base, mainly produce attractants based on dry animal blood, extracts from shrimp and marine crustaceans, manure worms, cakes, milk powder, caramel syrup, honey, confectionery flavors, household cleaning products and pharmaceutical industries.
From traditional attractants they often differ only in more or less decent form of packaging and the availability for use of the recommendations. Larger manufacturers are trying to get attractants by chemical synthesis or biotechnology (if that is more advantageous from a commercial point of view).
For a long time it is known that for each type of fish there is the usual food item, the taste and smell of which it knows best. Experiments have shown that fish respond better to the smell of food, which met earlier. Taste preferences of various fish species differ moreover, less than the fish are related to each other.
The composition of the attractant designed to attract fish certain species, often include compounds that contribute to a specific smell or taste some specific feeds of interest to these fish, a substance that attracts the effect of which on the fish has long been known (lactic, glutamic, aspartic, glycogen acid compounds based on propylene glycol).
However, not everything is so simple, and at presents the issue of chemical stimulation of taste and olfactory receptors fish remains open in many ways.
Various chemical polymers, silicone, of which is made soft artificial bait allows include an attractant in the most bait (if enough of its stability), which is advantageous for fishing predator that, unlike benthophagans looking extraction, focusing more on the vision and the side line, but can spit lure felt inedible taste.
From the producers of baits made of soft plastic incorporating the attractants in the firm Berkley especially known for the Russian market (series baits Power Bait), less aware Rublex (Bio-Bait).
Among other foreign manufacturers attractants, which are designed to catch fish very different species, Sensas Company may be called, Crave (attractants Crave Glow Brait Trout Bait, Crave Premium Trout Bait, Crave Ultra Violet Trout Bait – trout fishing), Pautzke (Pautzke’s Liquid Krill -for salmon fishing), Pro-Cure (Pro Cure Bait Cure), FIP, Maximus and others.
- Stimulants center famine fish. This is the most modern and sophisticated group of attractants, appeared on the market only to fisheries products in 2001. It is a synthetic analogue of the natural pheromone of fish, which irritates the hunger center in the brain and stimulates the fish to an immediate search of food.
Pheromone, called Factor X, was synthesized by British organizations and CEFAS Kiotech with the assistance of the Government of the United Kingdom and received the commercial name of Pheromone. On this basis, developed and implemented in the production of a series of attractants for catching fish of various species under the trade Ultrabite ™ brand.
Strictly speaking, Ultrabite ™ cannot be called just attractant as an innovative product, a pioneer in the market of means of attracting the fish, because it causes the fish do not just take the bait, and makes us look for any food. Ultrabite is, in my opinion, of particular interest to anglers, so I want to talk about their own experience of applying this attractant on winter and summer fishing.
The mobile and dynamic fishing with frequent transitions and drilling holes, find holes, joy fight with a predator – that make up the attractiveness of this method of fishing. In recent years, its rich, constantly updated assortment of vertical spinners and Finnish domestic production and bobs I added a lot of jig lures, designed, it would seem, for summer fishing.
A friend who lives in Canada, is also an avid fisherman, once I wrote that he, like most Canadians prefer to catch walleye jig lures and soft plastic, in other words and “rubber”.
And before last season, I began to apply when fishing from the ice and attractants. I have often used the flavored twisters and soft plastic bait for fishing on the open water, but the use of attractants in winter critical attitude, bearing in mind that the cold water smells spread significantly worse than in warm. And for good reason.
Attractants work in the winter. Having tried a number of fragrant poisons both imported and domestically produced, I chose Ultrabite. First party before the last winter season, I brought back from the UK, where he went on a business trip and where he came under the advertising, having read the local fishing periodicals.
Of the twelve proposed species attractants I chose those that were intended to attract fish, which I could and wanted to catch. I bought plastic bottles with labels Pike / Zander, General Coarse Fish, and for permanent fishing mate and I purchased Carp Bream / Roach.
Pike – gossip and universal attractants were tested me immediately, I will not deny the experimental results were worth the money spent. As follows from the brochure, “… when fishing in natural and artificial reservoirs involving professional fishermen, catches in the application Ultrabite attractants increased to 63 percent. Interest I did not consider, but the catch is really increased.
Predator took even when neighbors pecked badly or not at all pecked. But I noticed one peculiarity: if the fish took, it took very eagerly, like a hungry, and there was no gathering. When fishing from the ice Ultrabite I applied as an aqueous solution (as indicated in the instructions), apply it on the surface of lures, balancers and “silicone”, dipping into the bait solution.
To attractant not freeze, keep it in a small 200-milliliter thermos (drink it, alas, do not have to wear more because of the ingrained sharp odor). Experiments have shown that when fishing for perch, pike and zander better acted Pike / Zander.
Not being a fan of fishing jig, I cannot say anything about the General Coarse Fish, but a friend said that he fared well at catching on “imp” with replanting piece of orange foam rubber from the children’s toys, dipped in attractant. Fearing ruin plating expensive Finnish lures and color balance beams, at first I did not dare to be immersed in the attractant bait whole and only dipped tees, many of which I had imposed a simple fly or a brush of red woolen thread.
Subsequent experiments showed that the attractant except sharp odor, has no other harmful properties and does not spoil the bait, then it is destroyed after 12 hours (according to manufacturer’s information) and washed off easily enough water during actual fishing, and while washing with baits in flow tap water after fishing.
The best results were obtained when fishing lure on soft plastic on a jig head and replanting of very fine grub twisters species on large vertical hooks lures (provided that this does not impair the replanting games bait).
Silicone baits initially have a tendency to absorb all the gel-like, perfectly combined with the attractant, getting the smell, not inferior by the Berkley Power Bait, but far surpassing last for fishing efficiency. The severity of the “trial” bait for white fish entirely rests on the shoulders of my friend for a fishing trip.
Trying to catch an attractants Bream / Roach, Carp and General Coarse Fish, he particularly singled out the first and third. Perhaps attractant for carp fish would be good in summer, but a friend categorical supporter of the winter and summer fishing catch declined. In the summer I fished exclusively spinning and noticed that bream weighing more than 2.5 kg periodically rushed to float twister and took it eagerly, and in particular, but especially fishing lures bream, even with the use of attractants, did not deal with.
How to tell a friend, Bream / Roach are added to the bait when fishing for relevant fish and for fishing on the “imp” dipped in a solution of attractant pieces of foam rubber, which are tucked on the hook. Flow attractant when mixing with dry bait comprised of one vial (5 mL) of 0.5 kg of dry mix.
In spring fishing on bream he used special bait gelatin, which is made from a gelatin solution. It poured into a mold liquid gelatin, as the cooling of the latter is not less than up to + 20 ° C, add an attractant.
The thus obtained pieces of jelly put in feeders and sent to the bottom. Under the influence of water jelly gradually eroded by supporting fragrant cloud in the fishing zone. With the same purpose, when it was too lazy to bother with jelly, mate solution attractant impregnated foam or cloth, which also put in a feeding trough.
Catches of bream and roach after the above steps have significantly increased. I not only became a supporter of this wonderful means for winter fishing, but also made some conclusions.
First of all, when competently staged process manage to save a little. One ampoule attractant containing 5 ml of the concentrated liquid must be reconstituted in a pint of fresh water. Half a liter attractant solution – it is pretty much the same for fishing, especially if they are not impregnated foam or cloth, do not dip it in baits or dead fish, and fish in the small artificial lures. Even less is consumed attractant when fishing on the “imp” with replanting.
Keep a ready solution is impossible (it is destroyed after 12 hours), a plastic vial is intended for single use. The yield was found is simple: in the event that you need 200-250 ml of attractant can be cast from a vial to a remote “head” half and dissolve it in a quarter liter of water, a bottle with a second portion of the seal. Given that vial there is still a small amount of air (non vacuum), adding a new portion of small air does not lead to its deterioration.
If needed even less solution can be removed, for example, 1 ml of the attractant with 5 mL disposable syringe with a respective needle (2 milli-liter syringe is not suitable – in a very thin needle poorly typed viscous liquid) and diluted attractant in an appropriate amount of fluid, which is easy to calculate: 1 ml of the attractant is diluted in 100 ml of water. The opening of the needle remaining in the vial, in this case it is better not to seal and paint over clay, and store the vial in a rigid box. Thus, we were able to stretch one bottle attractant 5 fishing’s!
Attractant and its solution have a strong unpleasant smell. Fighting with him is possible, placing it in three bags, which are sold in any store that sells packaging materials.
If attractant is frozen, nothing bad happens to him, according to the instructions. Means afraid of heat, but not afraid to freeze.
Here, in general, and all I wanted to tell about their experiences with fishing attractants Ultrabite in winter.
