Fishing in the north – Cod Island

Fishing in the north

Group of the Faroe Islands due to their four-legged inhabitants of the islands are called sheep. However, there are more cod than sheep. And the cod weight is almost the same as that of the lamb.

Once again, do deflate rod movement, and the first cod of the five shows on the surface. A wide smile spreading on Daniels face as he looked over the bulwarks and saw five fish in the clear water. “I did not think that it works so well” – he said, shaking his head.

Daniels – ferrets, he grew up near the sea, but such fishing has never seen. I leaned over the gunwale and lifted the first three Top fish. Daniels postponed rod to the side and grabbed the other two; thus, all five fish were in the boat. Beautiful fish with perfect light belly and almost golden leopard pattern.

The smallest was a mass of 3 kg, the largest – almost 5 kg. A complete set, with one stroke of five. Daniels rubbed his lower back. “That’s work, – he said, still smiling – until the evening I am quite out of order.” What Andrew said: “Who binds four additional bait, he himself is to blame.”

Together with Andrew Gotha, well known captain of the charter boat, I came here to participate in sea fishing in the Faroe Islands. I always asked myself, what actually holds 50 thousand. Islanders and millions of seabirds in the inhospitable North Atlantic? Now I know the answer: they are all here because of the countless fish resources.

Halibut Cod instead. Hans Hansen, who organized the trip, fishing with us. In just three days, we wanted to explore deep-sea fishing near the island of Sidon. Sanda Island in the south of the Faroe Islands is considered to be the capital of the early summer halibut. And although we do not have no halibut on the hook, but we have opened a real Mecca cod.

Sanda is as its name indicates, one of the few of the Faroe Islands with a sandy soil. Therefore, some of the coves, which are usually almost always bordered by steep cliffs, sandy beaches, are gently sloping. In addition, between the island of Sanda and more southerly island of Suðuroy are sandy banks – a place of feeding and harvesting fish of many species.

On the first day the weather was pretty bad, so it was possible to endure only in waterproof suit fishing. But when you look at the boat Lundin Daniels I felt warm at heart. The boat is made in Iceland, its length is about twelve meters, and with two motors Volvo it goes pretty quickly. It develops a maximum speed of 28 knots and is equipped with modern navigation equipment: GPS navigation and sonar color.

Fish place in the port. We left the picturesque port Sandur and after a few minutes reached the first places of fishing. Anglers are often caught halibut, cod and Molveno long fishing line directly from the breakwaters. The first day we were caught on the usual baits. Hans has provided us with a sufficient amount of frozen mackerel, squid and sea snails called yet Gokken.

From the gear we had a rod Stand-Up with small two-speed multiplier reels. Since before lunch halibut did not show up, we replaced pilkers and began to catch pollock and cod weighing from 1.5 to 5 kg. The first small saithe I lowered to a depth of monofilament on a short leash diameter of 2 mm. Fish length of 20 cm was planted on the single hook number 8/0 per head.

With this method of fishing, I had a lot of empty bites. But natural bait in total caught more big fish than pilkery. Until late in the evening we fished for cod. The sun sank behind the high veil of mist began to rain. Prior to the rocks with their innumerable bird colonies, the cries of seagulls, puffins, gannets and gag we pulled one after another for cod.

About 19 hours for the fish box was full. Three of the last two hours we caught about 350 kg of cod. We took them a few pieces of fillet for dinner, and the rest gave Danyalu for sale. Not a bad start! The following days passed in a similar manner. We have improved our lures and accessories. It was only the next day in the evening, after we had a lot of bites on the small side; I began to catch on fluttering bait.

Fluttering bait for catching big fish

Leaving a seductive trail of blood and particles of fish meat, fish strips sink into the depths. I lower the rod down and turn the ratchet brake coil. Uniform jiggle show that the bait moves us at the very bottom. Bad smell hit my nose. We Andrew looked at each other, then Hans.

With an innocent expression on his face, he crushed sea snails and planted it on the hook. Then I put on the hook for another snail stinks and it’s all down to the water. Immediately followed by a bite. But I wanted to get with the help of a boat hook cod as my cracked brake coil. The fish was a 6-pound cod, the largest in the day. After that, we still caught in the “trembling” bait until the evening did not fill the fish box.

On the third day, we went on a reef near the port to catch pollack. Best to snap the leash is fishing packed with mackerel and herring. For the “fluttering” heads we made the cut on the back of a fish head to a length of 8 to 10 cm and removed the spine and internal organs and peritoneum left. The best success with circular hooks.

If everyone on board caught on such baits, it enhances the fragrant trail, which further increases the catch. The best success we have achieved with Circle Hook that can be passed through the nostrils of fish and hooks from thick wire – over the head behind the eyes. And on this day, too, a box full of fish. Each cod was more than 5 kg. Our trip to the Faroe Islands showed that although pilkers and catch ability, but the natural bait is much better.

Choosing natural baits on the Faroe Islands is very limited. Only occasionally can catch mackerel, herring season is very short. But everywhere there are large sea snails. They are relatively easy to catch some vertices, so here is a popular nozzle. Their thick leg rests perfectly on the hook.

A juicy clam body, apparently, is a real delicacy for fish. But most of all fish, including large, we caught our “fluttering” bait. Thrust Belt. While fishing in the Faros well proven our 30- and 50-pound rod Stand-Up. However, the 30-pound gear there is enough.

With a suitable thrust belt for pulling can put enormous pressure on the fish. Using braided fishing line 0.30 mm in diameter, will be ready to bite even halibut. In addition, the thrust belt helps in cases when it is necessary to get heavy sinker pilkers or about a kilogram of fish, even without a depth of 70 m. If you do not count on halibut, you can catch on a thinner rope.

I have with me been spinning rod Zebco Company the Rhino, and although it had a test only 55 g, I easily managed to pull out cod weighing up to 6 kg with a depth of 70 m. Our stay in the Faeroes was too short to explore all the possible places of fishing. In rivers and lakes hidden trout and char. On the coast, in some places you can fish for salmon and trout spinning.

But even without this, our journey was crowned with complete success. Additional Information. Around the Faroe Islands, and everywhere in between islands have fish. For starters, we recommend four places. Favorable conditions for fishing in the Faroe Islands are everywhere. We present you with only the four most important places.

Sanda. Between the islands and Sanda Sudur relatively protected waters and create optimal conditions for cod, saithe, Molveno, Men’kov and halibut. Travel from Sandur port Lundin boat. Season: cod, pollack, Menkov Molveno and caught all year round. March, June and September – the best months. Large cod best bite in February and March. The best chance to catch a halibut – in June. In the ports of Husavik and Dalur can catch in rivers and malls salmon and trout.

Mikines. Waters north of Mikines Fjord halibut are rich, but they still should be further explored anglers. Fans of sea fishing with pioneering enthusiasm should try to do it.

Streymoy. The waters around the capital Torshavn because of its position and protected from the weather. But there are treacherous currents. For surf fishing from the outer breakwaters can count on a good cod and Menkov. In rivers and lakes a lot of salmon and trout. A “hotspot” is located near the camping area on the northern outskirts of Torshavn.

Kalsi. In the waters north of Kalsi and Kunoy, as well as the surrounding islands fjords in the summer of large saithe caught. To the north of the Faroe Islands in February and March to catch a very large cod. However, such a winter fishing – quite a difficult task.
