Ring Roll Cast casting and casting Switch Cast are the most important types of casts when fishing on the nymph. In addition, they can be used when fishing on floating good dry fly or streamer, especially on large rivers with overgrown banks, where it is impossible to surpass Switch Cast, to reach the "hot spots". Advantages of the ring casts obvious. They are extremely versatile, even in very tight spaces, plus the fact that they cannot accidentally damage the rod heavy nymph.
Fly fishing technique
However, reflux Switch Cast, having countless opportunities, few have mastered. Austrian Günter Feuerstein - a renowned expert in the field of casting fly fishing is considered today one of the most respected instructors and fly fishermen. He offers this article, which contains many useful tips on how to effectively and with almost no effort to carry out Switch Cast, using its outstanding capabilities.
Roll Cast and Switch Cast, in fact, are not more than a half cast Gebetsroither Cast. Wizard Technology Hans Gebetsroither, also known as Austrian style cast or elliptical throw and not quite correctly called in America the Belgian style, based on the elliptical motion of the hand holding the rod during the cast. This means that during a stroke back (Back Cast) cord moves under the rod tip, and when casting forward - on the rod tip. Thus, the principle holds constant tension cord at a relatively large loop.
For all types of casting ring it is extremely important to the formation of a large loop cord behind the thrower (increased D-shaped loop), since in this case the cord stores more energy. This is best achieved at a low position of the elbow during a stroke back. This cord is really moving at the tip of the rod and still enough space to send the rod tip to "1:00" (open D-shaped loop) before a sharp throw forward, which is actually the usual direct reflux through the head (pulling or pushing motion with accentuated stop) .
Quick stops, combined with a very powerful incentive provide straightening undergrowth, pulling out of the water nymphs and cable deployment. Push accented fast but smooth movement of the index presses or thumbs (depending on how you hold the handle of the rod) in the last phase of the casting.
Rotated his wrist and index finger when the push come back, forming a straight line with his hand. This movement ends with the end of the rod hits the arm. This movement, which I use when all my throws, I call Dynamic Lock.
Ring throw, or a Switch Cast?
During the first part of the ring throw the cord moves toward the thrower, is continuously in contact with water. In this phase, the rod is held very close to the body and parallel to its axis (almost vertical), so that the thrower back may be formed from the greatest possible D-shaped loop, which provides the most long acceleration path.
If you need to throw the ring in the target located at a considerable distance from you, we should recognize that even with the excess energy of the throw, you reach the desired distance (depending on the taper of the cord). When it is impossible to expand cord (detach it completely from the water), so that the adhesion of a long string ("sticking" it to the surface of the water) is too large for the rod or for too long tulip issued for extension of the thin cord. Be that as it may, the cast will not work. Here for such situations is better to use Magic Switch casting.
There are many ways to perform a Switch Cast. Forward Spay Casting and threw Underhand, proposed by Goran Andersson, variations on the same theme. My version of casting Switch Cast is based on the natural hand position while providing optimum freedom of hand movement, performing cast.
The method minimizes the energy expended and maximizes results. If you throw Switch Cast perform correctly, the cord beautifully unfolds without applying any effort - pure magic. That's why I gave the name of this type of casting Magic Switch.
When you cast Magic Switch you start to sway back, gently lifting cord with water to reduce its adhesion. To optimize the recovery phase, I use the movement, which is called "catch the wave". This movement reduces the "caking" and helps to better control point "anchor".
Carrying out a throw Switch Casting, I hold the rod at an angle of 45 ° (lateral position) relative to the axis of the body, providing optimum freedom of movement is carried out throw the hand (optimal D-shaped loop). If you barely lift the rod tip at the beginning of casting, and will lead in the direction of the stop point, continuously increasing speed, you will see that along the cord, from the tip of the rod to the undergrowth, wave run.
The wave is easy, piece by piece, removes lead from the water surface. Therefore, the energy that you have to spend on the rise of the cord from the water surface is reduced to a minimum and ensures better control of the second casting phase.
In this part of the wave movement (subsidence wave) the tip of the rod is moving in the direction of the stopping point. The cord should (stage direction) the movement of the rod tip. As a result, the stop point is not the result of random coincidences, and precise planning. If the rod was abruptly stopped in this position, the entire cable would lay matted wad exactly at this point.
To prevent this, the second part of the "catch the wave" is faster, and the tip of the rod should implement a broad and circular motion, ending with the fact that he holds the position of "1:00" (open phase of D-shaped loop). Do not forget about the low position of the elbow, which I mentioned at the beginning and an elliptical movement during stroke to get a good, wide D-shaped loop!
Formation of D-shaped loop
After doing the above, behind the fisherman, lower the rod tip is formed large, wide D-shaped loop, and only the front portion of the cord (ideally only undergrowth) touches the water is 2-3 meters away. All traffic should be performed smoothly (translational acceleration) and smoothly, so that the end of the cord, instead of dipping into the water surface in parallel, not overtaken by another portion of the cord during the "anchor" phase.
- If you feel that there is such an "overtaking", you just have a little speed up the movement of the rod tip during the phase of formation of D-shaped loop or change the angle of a few movements of the rod tip toward the point of "anchor".
- Slightly changing the height position of the rod tip, you can correct minor errors made during the ascent phase (for example, make the most of the D-loop). Of course, you should never straighten the elbow in this phase. Otherwise, the tip of the rod will never be able to move in a straight trajectory during the throw forward.
Waiting in the position of "1:00"
Now, when the tip of the rod occupied the position of "1:00", you can "wait" until the undergrowth touches the surface of the water. Make sure the elbow is not the side or front of the body, and behind him to D-shaped loop turned out as widely as possible. Just at the moment when the cord will be on the water, roll forward start (power phase).
Make sure that at the time when the fly stopped on the side of you, splash water line was longer than 1 m! In this case, the length of the contact line of underbrush with water is sufficient to load the rod and will help you dramatically reduce the force required to throw forward. Because Magic Switch casting plane extends laterally from you, at a distance of 3.2 m, and not near a body, forward movement must be very short. Otherwise, the tip of the rod leaves the casting plane.
Stop rods or in a position in front of you (the horizontal opening of the loop) or too low (vertical opening loop) are the two main errors of this type of casting. Opening of the loop means always throw unnecessary energy loss. Sometimes it may be necessary, but it is necessary to effectively reduce the casting energy loss.
For the Magic Switch it means rectilinear trajectory of the rod tip, stop at "11 o'clock" with the powerful thrust ("dynamic lock ') position. My roll forward is very short. I'm only slightly move forward holding the rod hand is accelerating the movement and stop it using the "dynamic locking." This means that the tip of my rod stops are very high. Push must be progressive and be in harmony with the speed of movement of the rod and its systems.
Only in this way we can achieve very efficient loading of the rod up to its thickest part and have a narrow loop which makes it possible to not require excessive force to cast long distances. Depending on the length of the cord, which is to be raised from the water, and the selected forward corner casting experienced angler can change the amplitude or magnitude of the wave motion ( "pickup wavelength") during the lifting phase. And so it can accurately control the casting!
The role of the hand holding the cord
When the casting ring novice fishermen do not have to use the second hand at all (it is better to clamp the cord between the handle of the rod and the middle finger), or try to make it fulfill a passive role. To do this, always holding a cord between the hand and the first ring on the rod (soon-to-reel) and it was the same amount of cord.
In any case, the distance should never be between the hand holding the cord and the first ring to increase runtime stroke back. Otherwise, much of the path, in which the rod is loaded (when casting forth) will be lost, because the cord is pulled through the ring during a stroke back, slip through the rings during the cast forward, with rod unload. Therefore, the rod starts to bend too late. As a result, the load will be insufficient for normal casting.
An experienced fisherman can improve the efficiency of the annular casting using a single rod during the cast forward, which helps the stronger load the rod. This principle also applies to the pelting Magic Switch, at the same time, and efficiency, and the casting distance can be significantly increased. When the Magic Switch single link should not be too long, because the roll forward in the Magic Switch is too short, and they should be in harmony with each other.
Dual Rod and Switch Cast
The distance that you can throw, using the Switch Cast, can be increased by applying double cord traction, as in the case of regurgitation through the head. Dual Rod offers advantages only when you use cords with a long front of the thickened part (belly), which require a longer acceleration and drift, a large expenditure of energy and, of course, more space behind the thrower.
When the double-thrust should be remembered that the cord holding the hand must always follow the hand holding the rod during the transfer rod to "1:00" in order to be able to download a good rod, performing traction when throwing forward. As a result, the loop behind the fly fisherman is changed, it will take a V-shape (more cord between the rod tip and the stop point), and the lower part of the cord can easily grab too much water. This means that it will take much more energy to again pull the cord out of the water.
Many fishermen are baffled in these situations. Dual traction when the Switch Cast difficult even for professionals. It requires a different technique based on the use of high speed and energy, and the opposite philosophy, which is based on my elegant and obviously that does not require much effort Magic Switch casting. Technology Switch Cast combined with double traction in general is not suitable for catching fish and careful in situations where there is available only a limited space.
Magic Switch casting has been invented in order to minimize energy consumption and maximize the effectiveness and the elegance of casting. Movement casting optimized to prevent any loss of energy and make your fishing more enjoyable. With any other type Switch pelting you will not have a better loop. For the modern fisherman who prefers fishing on a dry fly and used instead of casting through Magic Switch head as the main type cast (even when fishing the dry fly), cords with extended front part no longer needed. Even without the use of casts over his head, you can successfully catch fish more than 95-98% of the possible situations.
Technique casting Magic Switch is good for cords type WF and shooting heads with the conical portion up to 12 m. Using the Magic Switch technology, you can easily and effortlessly increase the distance casting up to 25 m, using only a single thrust, unless, of course, know how to her perform.
Field of use depending on personal preference
"At what distance casting you go on to the Roll Cast Switch Cast»? I am often asked this question. There are no guidelines on this matter. Everyone has their own preferences. This is normal. Casting on the fly is to be effective and enjoyable. When fishing, I usually switch from one to another if casting distance of about 12 m, depending on the length of the cord and the rod used.
I prefer to use cords Wulff TT or equivalent type Loop Opti Stillwater. They really work well on long circular casts.
For very large distances and cast only for large rivers, where you can catch in the water, I sometimes use strings WF type with an elongated front part. Of course, the use of cords of a type entirely private matter and is associated with personal feelings and preferences, as well as from a reservoir, in which fishing is carried out. Everyone should use the equipment with which comfortably. But in other situations, then, in my opinion, the goal should always be to keep costs to a minimum of their efforts.
Rod is very important for a good throw Switch Cast. Rods, which works only when casting the tip, generally not suitable for "water casting," as I call them. For "water casting" we need to load a solid lower part of the rod in order to generate more energy to cast. Parabolic rods (they should not be too soft). Or even better progressive rod, which cope well with the job. Even novice fishermen immediately recognized it. The length of the rod is also an important factor. Do not use shorter rods 8 feet! Of course, it is possible to catch and them, but the ring casts and casts Switch, will be more difficult. For fishing nymphs, I tend to use a nine-foot rod.
And the last piece of advice before you start your workout, do not forget from time to time to check the joints (especially if you are using a rod-type Travel with three or more tribes). If during casting Switch Casts joints weaken, it may damage the rod. Train in a good mood and have fun casting Magic Switch!
